Social Security Disability Insurance is a federally run program that provides assistance to Americans who are unable to work due to a permanent disability. The funds to pay disability benefits come from the Social Security Tax which workers’ pay into throughout their working life. This tax is known more commonly as FICA, which stands for Federal Insurance Contributions Act. In order to be eligible for disability benefits, it is important to have worked consistently and paid into the system through your FICA tax.

Qualifications for SSD Benefits
There are two qualifying elements for Social Security Disability benefits. The first is that you have a permanent disability which is defined as a disability that will prevent you from working 12 months or more. The second element is that you must have worked long enough, and recently enough, to have earned enough "work credits."
Social Security work credits are based on your annual wages or income. You can earn up to four credits per year. The dollar amount needed per work credit changes each year. Our legal team can help you determine how many work credits you have earned through your working history. The number of work credits needed to qualify depends upon the age of the person applying at the time he/she became disabled. Normally, the amount required is 40 credits and 20 of those must have been earned within the 10 years prior to becoming disabled.
